Master Chef Trey Version ~Let’s Make Jalapeño and Capsicum Pizza 1~

―A short time before cooking starts.

Story Kalim Chef.png
Man, I was surprised that Trey was going to take the Master Chef class.

You’re good at cooking right? Is there anything else you need to learn?

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
It’s true I’m used to it.

I make sweets at my dorm, and back home I’d prepare the meals for my busy parents.

Story Kalim Chef.png
Kalim
Kalim
Story Kalim Chef.png
Then why did you try out… oh, I know. You’re just aiming for the credits! Right?
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Sorry, that’s also wrong.

My motivation for this is to learn to teach how to cook.

Story Kalim Chef.png
Kalim
Kalim
Story Kalim Chef.png
Mmm? So instead of how to cook…. “how to teach”?
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Yeah. Recently I’ve been teaching my kouhai on how to make the sweets we put out for the Unbirthday Parties.

Until now I’ve been taking the lead on making everything, but when I become a fourth year, I won’t be around most days thanks to the practical training, right?

That’s why while I can, I want to be able to create an environment where I can entrust the sweets-making with some peace of mind.

Somehow, I’m just not that good at teaching. I’m struggling to guide them.

Story Kalim Chef.png
Kalim
Kalim
Story Kalim Chef.png
Really? You seem like you’d be really good at teaching.

Whenever the Dorm Leaders and Vice Dorm Leaders have our meetings, it’s so easy to understand what you’re saying.

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Haha, I’m glad to hear you say that, but whenever it has to do with cooking, it just becomes hard

…I know, let me give you an example. What do you think “hash out the eggs” mean?[1]

Story Kalim Chef.png
Kalim
Kalim
Story Kalim Chef.png
“Hash out?” Do you mean like solve a question with eggs?
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Yeah, as expected… One of our dorm students responded the same way too.

Hash the eggs mean to mix the white and yellow parts together.

Story Kalim Chef.png
Kalim
Kalim
Story Kalim Chef.png
Eh, I didn’t know at all!
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
See? Just like right now, it seems like there are many expressions that people who have very little cooking experience don’t know.

In fact, there have been times where they understood the meaning differently than how they were taught. For example…

If I ask for them to measure out a tablespoon, I might get asked “How many spoons are enough for a table?”

They took the word table and mistook that to mean “a lot” instead of indicating a specific measurement.[2]

Story Kalim Chef.png
Kalim
Kalim
Story Kalim Chef.png
Uwa― if you told me that, I probably would have mistaken it for “a lot” too.
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
I grew up watching my parents make dinner and sweets…

And if I told my little sister or brother to “hash out the eggs” or “measure out one tablespoon of flour,” everything moved smoothly.

That’s why it doesn’t occur to me to think that those unfamiliar to cooking would stumble over cooking procedures or words in a recipe.

Story Kalim Chef.png
Kalim
Kalim
Story Kalim Chef.png
I see―That’s why you said you wanted to “learn how to teach”
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Yeah. This is something that had been worrying me for a while, but…

A little while ago, one of our dorm students who tried the Master Chef course became drastically good better at cooking.

I thought that if I also took this program, I might learn the secret of teaching.

Story Kalim Chef.png
Kalim
Kalim
Story Kalim Chef.png
I see~ After hearing that, I’m getting more excited for the Master Chef course.

I hope I’ll be able to get good at cooking too―

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
I’m sure you will.

…Oops. The lessons is going to start soon. Kalim, lets move to the kitchen.

Bg 61391.png
Kitchen
Chef Ghost Now, I’ll simply explain the cooking process to Trey-kun.
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Yes, thank you very much.
Chef Ghost Alright! First, mix and knead the flour, and make the pizza dough.

Once you’re finished making it, we need to let the yeast ferment for a little while. In the meantime, start making the tomato sauce.

Once the sauce is made, we mold the pizza dough we let lie earlier. Next, we put on the toppings…

Finally, bake it in the oven we preheated, and it’s done!

Usually from here I explain that in more detail, but you seem like you’re used to it, so that may not be needed.

Do you have any questions or anything you don’t understand?

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
I’ve made this back home with my family, so not really… …Oh, wait.

At this point in the explanation, for those who are new to cooking, there might be some points at which they stumble.

Could you please tell me what kind of questions you’ve received from students so far?

Chef Ghost Eh, so far? Let’s see…

We have a lot of students who ask for explanations like: Why do we shake the flour? Can’t we mix normally?

A great example is when once a student heard the word “sift through the flour”…

They asked, “I have to sort out the good and bad flecks of flour one by one!?”

I was quite surprised at that.

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
I see. So even if I use the phrase “sift through the flour,” there’s guys who might not know the word “sift.”

So when teaching it’s important to clarify the purpose, and to make sure that specialized languages aren’t being used.

Is there anything else that the students have asked you that has surprised you?

Chef Ghost The one that surprised me the most is the question you asked~
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Eh. Did I ask that much of a strange thing?
Chef Ghost Fufufu, that’s because…

That was the first time I’d ever had a student ask me if I’d ever been asked question before~

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Haha… sorry for surprising you.

But, the story you told me earlier of the person who was not that good at cooking is going to be a good reference for me right away.

Thank you, please continue.

  1. Trey uses the word toku which can, among other things, mean solve but in context of this means more like scramble. I chose a word that would come close to both.
  2. Trey uses the word ippai which can mean “one” or “a lot” depending on the kanji/context. I adjusted the example to try to have it make sense with the English terms.

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Is this about enough kneading for the dough?
Chef Ghost Yep, the surface has become smooth, so it’s good! Let it ferment a while, and start making the tomato sauce while you wait.
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
… Alright, the garlic we sautéed is starting to have more of an aroma.

All I have left to do is to add the tomato into the frying pan, season with salt and pepper, and the sauce is complete.

Finally, the ingredients go on top of the dough, like so. …I’m done.

Chef, I finished placing the toppings.

Chef Ghost OK! Then bake it in the pre-heated oven for 10 minutes.
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Yes sir.

―Alright, it’s ready to go. Now we just have to wait for it to cook.

Might as well do some clean up now.

Chef Ghost Why, it was beneficial that you’ve been making sweets for a while now! It’s such a rare sight to see something so well done!

I wonder what kind of pizza it’ll become. I’m also looking forward for it to finish cooking!

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Thank you very much. I also learned a lot today.

Thanks to this, I might be able to teach the dorm students how to cool a lot smoother than I’ve done in the past.

…Oh, it’s done.

Now to add the final toppings to the pizza right out of the oven… Alright, it’s completed.

It’ll be the most delicious the hotter it stays. I have to hurry and take it to the judges.

Hm? This voice…

So you’re my judge, Vil.

It seems like luck is with me today. It’s unlikely that you’ll serve something that cannot be eaten.

Haha… It’ll be nice if it suits Vil’s palate.

Story Trey Chef.png
it’s a Jalapeño and Capiscum Pizza. Eat it while it’s still hot.
Story Vil School.png
Vil
Vil
Story Vil School.png
Eh… what is this!?

I absolutely thought it would be a pizza with the jalapeños and capsicum just placed on top, but it’s completely different from what I imagined.

On top of the scattered jalapeños, shredded capsicum are arranged in a flower shape, giving the sensation that flowers are blooming in a meadow.

The tomatoes and olives, as well as the onions provide such beautiful color accents as well.

It’s more voluminous and gorgeous than a standard pizza. It’s more like a decorated cake.

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Hmm, did I put a little too much on after all?

But it’s for a meal, and so I thought I’d add a lot of nutritious vegetables

I might as well add ingredients that would add to a colorful appearance.

Story Vil School.png
Vil
Vil
Story Vil School.png
Well, as expected we see just how much you’ve gotten used to making sweets.

Instead of just following the recipe as it’s laid out, using your ingenuity is just like you.

However, to begin with a pizza is…

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Ah, yeah.

As the ingredients increased, I replaced cake flour with coconut flour as a way to try to reduce fat and sugar content.

That way, I think even those who take care of the nutritional balance of their meals like Vil should be able to eat it without problems.

Story Vil School.png
Vil
Vil
Story Vil School.png
There it is. Just as I was about to say it.

Really, you’re too thoughtful that I could hate it.

Hm? What’s wrong, Ruggie?

I thought Kalim’s dish you were judging finished cooking a little while ago and was brought here already.

Story Ruggie School.png
Ruggie
Ruggie
Story Ruggie School.png
Kalim-kun got a little too carried away with the dish so he failed. So, he’s remaking it right now with the chefs.

Man, I’m about to collapse I’m so hungry~~~

Story Trey Chef.png

Story Trey Chef.png
What?
Story Vil School.png
Vil
Vil
Story Vil School.png
To be so proactive like that all the time is a bad habit.

Even when some of your dorm students are about to mess up cooking, aren’t you stepping in to help immediately just like you did now?

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Ah, when you say it like that… There’s often a time that I’ll do it for them instead.
Story Ruggie School.png
Ruggie
Ruggie
Story Ruggie School.png
Wh-what a nice senpai… I’m so envious of Heartslabyul!
Story Vil School.png
Vil
Vil
Story Vil School.png
Envious? I’m saying that that part of him is no good.

Looking after your kouhai isn’t what’s bad. But it’s another thing entirely to take care of them too much.

It’s possible that by doing so you deprive them of the opportunity for growth. You need to think about balance.

Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
… Now that you mention it, my parents, who taught me how to cook, would often just stand and watch over me while I practiced.

Same for the time my first ever batch of cookies were black and burnt to a crisp.

If they were watching from the side, they should have known what the result would be. But they never told me to do it one way or the other to fix it.

So that was to help me gain the experience of “failure.”

Story Vil School.png
Vil
Vil
Story Vil School.png
I wonder if you’re able to understand a bit of what I was saying then.
Story Trey Chef.png
Trey
Trey
Story Trey Chef.png
Yeah. Thanks, Vil. Your words were helpful.

I’ll explain how to cook in simple terms, and position myself to just watch over them.

―Right. When I return to the dorm, I’ll put into practice immediately.

I’m glad that I tried out for the Master Chef after all.
