Family

Azul is from the far north of the Coral Seas.[1] His mother manages and runs a very famous restaurant back in the Coral Sea that she started as a small business. Azul seems embarrassed by the family restaurant that he didn't want Floyd and Jade to visit it back in middle school.[2] His stepfather is a lawyer his mother met while filing for divorce from her first husband, and he taught Azul a lot about law and contracts. His entire family is full of mages, and among them, his grandmother is the most powerful and would use her magic to help their neighbors with any problems they have.[3] His mother and grandmother taught him some simple magic. Azul is an only child, but when questioned about having a sibling, he expressed interest in having a cute younger sibling that could also help him with his business endeavors.[4]

According to Azul, his family is relatively laid back and are fine with what he does as long as he did his homework.

Childhood

Azul was able to use simple magic to pull objects towards him since he was 8. As a child, Azul was chubby and introverted, and his many tentacles and tendency to spew ink when he cried led his peers to bully him for his differences. He was not as studious as he is presently as well. Due to being an octopus mer, Azul wasn't as good as swimming as the other children. However, he learned to use his many tentacles for writing grimoires and magic circles. Azul has been in the same class as Floyd and Jade since elementary school. However they did not befriend him until middle school[5] when they discovered Azul studying and writing spells.[6] Azul is very ashamed of his childhood self, going as far as tracking down all photos of him from the time to edit himself out and entering in a secret contract with Jade and Floyd to never talk about that period of time.[7]

Once, as a child, Azul found a coin near a sunken ship that he discovered was a rare commemorative coin from a far off kingdom. Because only 100 of those coins had been minted for the celebration, Azul learned that the value went from 100 to 500,000 madol to a collector. The disparity between the prices fascinated him, leading him to start collecting coins, amassing 200 coins in his collection at the present.[3]

Azul began devoting himself to serious magical study after he entered middle school. His magic studies eventually paid off, and he started using his unique magic "It's A Deal" to enter in contracts with his classmates to grant their wishes in exchange for whatever skill or magic that they are most proud of.

He knows how to play the piano and was in a band with Jade (contrabass) and Floyd (drums) in middle school.[8]

Even before his acceptance into Night Raven College, Azul was very interested in surface life. He and Jade already knew many of the things they were taught at the surface boarding camp they attended in preparation for life at NRC.[9]

At Night Raven College

1st year

Azul, Floyd, and Jade were all sorted into Octavinelle by the Dark Mirror after joining Night Raven College.

While at a club fair, Azul saw the Board Game Club booth managed by Idia and Ortho, and after they showed him a business game, he decided to join to improve his business skills.[3] As part of the Board Game Club, Azul encountered the follies of luck-based dice games when introduced to Magical Life by Idia. In an effort to overcome his terrible luck the first time he played, Azul spent the next week practicing his dice rolling to be able to get the number he desires one-third of the time.[10]

Azul's use of his unique magic to bargain other's powers away continued when he got into Night Raven College. He would make deals that cater to the request of the students in exchange for their best abilities or other prized objects. This practice skyrockets during exam season where Floyd and Jade would help Azul find troubled students and guide them into making deals with Azul that are usually contingent on making making the top 50 in exam rankings.[11] Due to the sheer amount of exam contracts that Azul makes, this usually results in the final exam rankings being heavily skewed upwards, leading to very few people succeeding in their contracts and many students getting their magic stolen. In his freshman year, in order to return the stolen magic, Crowley agreed to let Azul open Mostro Lounge on campus, with the deal that the school get 10% of the lounge's profits.[12]

Main Story (2nd year)

Azul became Octavinelle's dorm leader in his 2nd year, and Jade was chosen to be his Vice. Prior to the freshmen orientation, Azul entered in a contract with Vil to provide him with a better toner in exchange for 10 Shaftland flowers Vil grew. He fulfilled his end of the contract by creating a toner using slime excreted by Floyd's eel form.[13]

Prologue

The appearance of Grim at orientation caused such a fuss that Azul volunteered to capture Grim and enlist Riddle's help in the endeavor. They cornered Grim and Riddle was able to use his unique magic to end Grim's fire rampage.[14] Following orientation, Azul, Jade, and Floyd made their way back to Mostro Lounge where Azul welcomed the new freshmen with a speech.[15]

Episode 2

During the Magift Tournament (Spell Drive Tournament in the English Localization), Azul was the head of the planning committee and was in charge of organizing the shops and vendors set up during the event, inviting royalty, managing ticket sales, organizing media coverage requests, and processing dorm player rosters and registration, adding that any late submissions would be required to pay a late fee. When Crowley brought up the idea of inducting Malleus into the hall of fame to remove him from the competition, Azul was interested in Leona's declaration of aiming to defeat Malleus as it would boost ratings for the event.[16] Leona then later entered into a contract with Azul to change the player procession to start at the east entrance, causing the players to have to make their way through a large crowd to enter the stadium. Azul also provided Leona with a magic boosting potion that Ruggie ended up drinking to try and create a stampede that aimed to injure Diasomnia's Magift team. On the day of the tournament, Azul was busy organizing and managing the stalls and vendors around the coliseum.[17] Following the Magift Tournament, Azul was pleased to see a 12% increase in sales compared to the previous year. Even though Floyd brought up how as a dorm they placed towards the bottom in the competition, Azul was fine with it as they weren't in last place and wrote off the event, saying they should instead focus on the exam season that was coming up.[18]

Episode 3

Azul continued his business of making contracts with struggling students during the exam period with an even bigger reach, causing even more students to fall victim to his contracts. As a result, Grim, Ace, and Deuce all fell victim to Azul's contracts and were forced to work at Mostro Lounge at Azul's bidding. In order to rescue the tricked students, Crowley enlisted the aid of Yuu and Jack to undo the contracts.[12] Yuu ends up making a contract with Azul to release the students if Yuu is able to retrieve a photo from the Atlantica Memorial Museum within 3 days, with Ramshackle Dorm as collateral.[19] However, to prevent them from succeeding, Azul told Floyd and Jade to prevent them from entering the museum.[20] When Yuu and the others decided to try and destroy the contract the next day, Azul set up a contract in the VIP room that would electrocute anyone that touched it to trick the gang in to thinking that his contracts are indestructible and was about to punish them for sneaking in before he got distracted by Floyd's magic hitting the safe. While Azul was scolding Floyd, the gang managed to escape back to the Hall of Mirrors.[21] On the third and final day of Yuu's contract with Azul, he again sent Floyd and Jade to prevent the gang from delivering the photo to him and stayed behind to manage Mostro Lounge. A ruckus started occurring in the lounge caused by Savanaclaw students fighting and ordering huge amounts of food and when Azul went out to calm the crowd Ruggie was able to pickpocket the safe key from him. He quickly noticed the missing key and returned to the VIP room to find Leona who returned the key to him and saw that all his contracts were missing.[22] He rushed outside to find Leona and Ruggie with all his contracts and begged them to give them back, Leona then proceeded to explain Yuu's plan to Azul before using his Unique Magic to turn all of Azul's contracts to dust.[23] Azul then had a meltdown where he proceeded to use his Unique Magic without a contract to steal all the magic of those around him, leading to an overuse of his magic and causing him to overblot.[24] Leona, Ruggie, and the recently returned Jade, Floyd, Jack, Deuce, Ace, and Grim all teamed up to subdue the overblotting Azul.[25] When Azul awoke from his overblot the surrounding people consoled him while also scolding his underhanded tactics before Jack handed him the picture Azul requested as part of his deal with Yuu. Floyd then proceeded to point out child Azul in the photo to the gathered people, exposing Azul's insecurities about his past self, a sentiment Deuce related to and proceeded to agree that everyone should forget what they saw. However the others professed their fondness for treasuring memories leading Azul to agree to let the one photograph of him at a young age stay.[26] Later Azul treated Yuu, Grim, Jack, Ace and Deuce to a trip to the museum where they put the picture back and were able to learn more about underwater life.[27] Afterwards, due to rules set by Crowley about magic stealing, Azul introduced a new point system at Mostro Lounge. After accumulating 50 points, students would be able to consult with Azul.[28]

Episode 4

During winter break, Azul, Jade, and Floyd all stayed on campus due to their homeland being covered in ice floes during that time of year, making it hard for them to return.[29] As a result, when Grim and Yuu make their escape from Scarabia, the Magic Carpet brought them to Octavinelle where the trio were able to help them escape the Scarabia students chasing them.[30] Upon hearing about the situation at Scarabia from Yuu and Grim, the Octavinelle boys noted many odd things about the situation, leading Azul to decide to "help" Jamil out, claiming he had turned a new leaf since his overblot incident.[31] The next day, Azul, Jade, and Floyd went with the Ramshackle duo under the pretense of bringing back the thieves to Scarabia and returning the magic carpet to Kalim. Jamil was unsettled by the Octavinelle trio's arrival and attempted to get them to leave as soon as possible, but Azul insisted on personally delivering the magic carpet to Kalim so Octavinelle would not be blamed for any future issues that may pop up with the carpet, and pushed his way past Jamil to deliver the carpet to Kalim.[32] Upon returning the magic carpet to Kalim, and commenting on how Scarabia would be a prime location to have a resort, Azul asked about Scarabia's holiday training camp and then offered to join them to improve relations between the dorms. Jamil immediately advised Kalim against Azul's proposal, due to Octavinelle being one of the dorms they were attempting to beat, however when Kalim pointed out he also invited Ramshackle dorm to the camp, Jamil had no counter to that, leading for him to advise Azul directly against joining their camp. Azul conceded to Jamil before the Octavinelle trio proceeded to guilt trip Kalim into insisting they stay. Azul quickly agreed and pledged to help Scarabia with their studying, while Jade and Floyd also offered to help with the cooking and cleaning.[33]

Following their first day training with Scarabia, the Octavinelle boys and the Ramshackle duo regrouped in their room to discuss what they noted so far and concluded that Kalim's mood swings must be the result of outside interference, Azul asked Jade to go "talk" to him alone to try and determine the source of the mood swings, while the rest of them went to play board games with Jamil.[34] Once Jamil taught the group the rules Azul proceeded to beat Grim at the game 5-0 while noting how Jamil had let Floyd win 3-2 and commented on it under his breath. However, Jamil noticed the comment and tried to get Azul to explain what he meant so in order to divert the conversation Azul asked Jamil about his childhood growing up with Kalim. After quickly confirming they grew up together Jamil threw the question back at Azul and Floyd asking about their childhood friendship. Floyd went on to clarify how he didn't even know Azul existed until middle school, with Azul supplying that he was a quiet kid in class. When Jamil commented on how it appeared as if their roles had been reversed now with Azul's dorm leader status, Azul clarified that the twins likely aren't that loyal to him, and more so go along with his plans out of interest or amusement, with Floyd agreeing and characterizing the dorm leader and vice relationship as a normal relationship. When Jamil noted how the idea of a normal relationship between dorm leader and vice was lost on him due to his position as the Asim's servant, Azul noted the way he talked about it, before Kalim arrived with Jade to the group. Suspicious of Jade's talk with Kalim, Jamil immediately dragged Kalim back to his room to sleep.[5] Returning back in their room, Jade reported to Azul that their suspicions were confirmed, and Kalim was being magically mind controlled. After Jade explained the magic basis behind mind control to Grim and Yuu, Azul noted how even he would have a hard time mind controlling people, cause Grim to be confused as he believed that no one in Scarabia had even half of Azul's magical skill, however, Azul expressed his doubts at that idea. When questioning Jade, Floyd accidentally revealed Jade's unique magic to Jade's displeasure, leading Grim to ask about it, and while Jade was somewhat reluctant, Azul pointed out how for magicless human, knowing about a unique magic wouldn't change their susceptibility to the magic. From Jade's recollection about how Kalim managed to avoid Jade's Shock the Heart through a promise, Azul laughed at how Kalim's conviction was strong enough to avoid Jade's magic before commenting about how Kalim's refusal to answer made it obvious who was mind controlling him, allowing him to make a plan to expose the mind controller.[35]

The next day, the group all woke up early to carry out the plan, by taking over Jamil's daily jobs under the pretense of giving him a break from all the work he does in Scarabia and taking care of Kalim. While Kalim was all for it, this clearly made Jamil very agitated as the Octavinelle trio took over everything, from cooking to the exercises and studying the dorm was doing, causing the Scarabia students to stop resenting Kalim and his previous choices.[36] During one of their study breaks Azul and Jamil volunteered to get tea for the students and while they were alone Jamil dropped the act and straight up told Azul to leave, before Azul made eye contract with Jamil, allowing him to use his unique magic on Azul. Seeing Azul under his control, Jamil revealed himself as the mastermind behind Kalim's mind controlled mood swings and started to order Azul and the twins to return to the Coral Sea, until he remember Azul's unique magic and thought about how useful having that under his control could be. Upon remembering the Azul lost his contracts Jamil was annoyed at the lost opportunity until Azul brought up that he still remembered the weaknesses of those he made a contract with, including Crowley's. That information filled Jamil with joy, leading him to reveal his goal of trying to replace Kalim as dorm leader before Jade stepped in.[37] Jade revealed to Jamil that Azul was live streaming everything on Magicam to 5,000 viewers and was even trending online. Having been caught, Jamil ordered Azul to attack everyone, at which point Azul revealed that he wasn't actually under Jamil's control due to having Floyd's unique magic as a collateral for giving him a deep voice. Kalim, in shock, still couldn't believe Jamil would do that too him causing Jamil to lash out at Kalim and then use his unique magic on the entire dorm to kick Kalim, the Octavinelle trio, and the Ramshackle duo out.[38]

While they were able to fight off the students, Jamil's complete mind control over the students caused them to keep attacking and caused Jamil to overblot with how much magic he used on the dorm.[39] Kalim and the Octavinelle trio were unable to quickly subdue Jamil allowing him to kick them out all the way to the end of the dimension to a cold dried up river. As they were discussing ways to make their way back to the dorm, Azul ripped up his contract with Floyd due to how annoying he found Floyd's deep voice.[40] When Kalim was still blaming himself over Jamil's betrayal, Yuu and the Octavinelle boys called him out for still making excuses for Jamil instead getting angry at Jamil's betrayal. Azul explained how Kalim's positive and innocent mindset feels insulting to calculating people such as himself and Jamil, but also noted how it wasn't really Kalim's fault as he had a very happy childhood and upbringing. With Kalim finally determined to return home and make Jamil pay for his betrayal, they started thinking again about how to get back, with Jade bringing up that a river would be helpful, and Azul agreeing that Jade and Floyd swimming would be even faster than brooms. Upon hearing that Kalim revealed his unique magic to the Octavinelle boys and it's ability to create a large amount of water for very little magic. Azul, was so shocked by the revelation, not because of how helpful it is for their current situation, but instead because it would be a very profitable magic to bring to countries with clean water shortages. With Kalim's water magic making a river Jade and Floyd turned into their merforms to bring Azul, Kalim, Grim, and Yuu back to Scarabia, Azul not transforming because even in his merform he's not a fast swimmer due to not having a tailfin.[41] After making their way back this time they were able to subdue Jamil and bring him back to his senses.[42] After Jamil recovered and he stopped putting up an act, and rejected Kalim's friendship to Azul's amusement. Azul then revealed that he had always been interested in Jamil due to his purposefully average performance and suspected Jamil was hiding something, and then offered Jamil a position in Octavinelle working together with Azul which Jamil promptly rejected and also swore off ever being friends with Azul. Unfazed by the rejected Azul was pleased as he managed to discover another person's weakness for his collection.[43] Following Jamil's recovery, Azul joined Kalim in celebrating with a parade and party at the oasis and continued to offer Jamil his support that Jamil continued rejecting out of dislike towards the idea of being indebted to Azul. At the oasis Jade suggested Azul take dancing lessons from Kalim or Jamil, which Azul promptly opposed.[44]

Happy Beans Day

While Azul excels in his studies, he suffers in PE class due to being unable to fly with a broom even as a 2nd year, to the point that Vargas assigned Jamil to teach Azul how to fly during class.[45] As a result he puts in a lot of effort preparing for and during Happy Beans Day to gain a good grade in PE class. As a freshman Azul was on the farmer's team and was caught immediately, and he had to endure strength training with Vargas until the end of the event.[46] Following his humiliating defeat, Azul spent many hours asking upperclassmen for their Happy Beans Day experience in order to deduce the locations of supply crates containing rare items. After learning that the "Happy Beans Day Management Committee" handles the distribution of crates and equipment, he invited each of the members for a "consultation regarding their worries" to gain information about next year's Happy Beans Day. However, his plans were almost thwarted during the event briefing when Vargas decided to remove the field scanner until Riddle objected to it and convinced Vargas that the equipment was necessary, which led Azul to feeling indebted to Riddle.[47]

In his 2nd year Azul was assigned to the monster team and after securing the equipment he planned to collect, he sought out Jack to join his team. Initially reluctant, Azul had to resort to threatening Jack to get him to agree to team up.[48] Following that the duo ran into Riddle and Deuce before letting them escape momentarily as Azul felt indebted to Riddle for his intervention during the event briefing. However, that was just a ploy as Azul then instructed Jack to take the duo down while their guards were lowered.[47] After Deuce protected Riddle from getting caught by Jack, Azul came out to try and capture Riddle, before Epel and Vil rescued Riddle, and the monster duo retreated.[49]

Afterwards they happened upon Leona and Ruggie trying to team up to ensure Leona didn't get outed from the game too early. After Jack captured Leona, Azul used this information to recruit Ruggie into joining their team.[50] Following Ruggie's addition, the trio all worked together to capture over 21 farmers before running into Floyd. Despite Azul's warning over riling up Floyd, Jack proceeded to taunt him leading to Ruggie getting beaned while protecting Azul. In the ensuing fight between Floyd and Jack, they ran into Rook and Trey and Azul enlisted their help in subduing with Floyd.[51] When Vil's group came in again to save Floyd the monster group retreated. After regrouping and discussing their objectives, Azul and Jack split off again to track down and try to eliminate Jade.[52]

Following Azul's suspicion, they headed to the Mr. S's Mystery Shop where they found Idia and in the ensuing search for Jade, fell into his trap, resulting in Jack getting drenched in durian juice.[53] With Jack's sense of smell out of the picture the two abandoned their search of Jade to go back to the coliseum and protect the harp, eliminating over 50 farmers along the way.[54] While protecting the harp until there were 4 players[55] left on both sides, Rook met back up with Azul and Jack at the coliseum where Azul and Rook worked together to determine where Jade might go to snipe the remaining monster team players.[56] Azul then went up to the main school building to capture Jade, who arrived shortly with an unarmed bean launcher as part of the farmer's plan to lure Azul away from the harp.[57] After the monster team finished capturing the farmers going for the harp, Azul went to the woods to subdue Floyd, the last farmer left who was engaged in a fight with Jamil, despite the latter already getting eliminated.[58]

Following the conclusion of the event Azul and Jack were named as MVPs.[59]

Ghost Marriage

During the incident where Eliza abducted Idia and attempted to marry him, Azul was in the middle of tutoring Kalim with Riddle when they were chased out of the lecture hall by ghost soldiers and ran to the sports field to escape them. After learning the circumstances of what was going on Azul laughed along with the rest of the students at the idea of Idia being the ideal prince the ghost bride had been looking for, pointing out ironic it was that of all the times for Idia to leave his room, this time was during the ghost bride's search.[60] After the other students refused to help Ortho save Idia, Othro threatened first to blow up the school before being stopped by Crowley, before then threatening the students to plaster their faces all over the media for abandoning Idia. Azul was unsurprised by Ortho's threats knowing his brother and agreed along with the rest of the students to help Ortho save Idia.[61]

The students then consulted with Sam on how to get rid of the ghosts and Sam provided them with an item perfect for their specific situation Azul was very impressed by Sam's stock selection. While the students were debating ways to get the ring of severance onto Eliza's hand, Azul concluded that they would have to become suitors as the only way to give her the ring would be through proposing to her with the ring. The plan was accepted by the other with Crowley officially calling the plan "Operation Propose".[62] Azul wasn't chosen in the first group of suitors due to not being over 180 cm but when the first group failed, Azul volunteered himself, verbally promising his success, after apologizing for Floyd and Jade's attempts, claiming they have no clue how to speak with women. Cater, Deuce and Lilia volunteered along with him and the 4 of them went to compete for the bride's hand.[63] Unfortunately Azul was rejected, slapped, and frozen, despite his research based on the previous attempts. Leading Floyd to make fun of the sheer force he was slapped with, while Jade surmised that it was the result of his overly talkative approach combined with his insincere body language, and Leona commented on how obvious it was that Azul didn't know how to talk to women.[64]

When Eliza brought Idia out to see the frozen students, Idia lamented his position while also insulting the failed students calling them useless and questioning why they go outside just to goof off, angering all the trapped students. When Eliza was delighted by Idia's telling off of the students she proposed moving the wedding to that night, at which point Idia pleaded to the trapped students to help him. Idia tried getting Azul to help him due to them being in the same club, however, Azul turned a blind eye to his pleas instead pretending to be moved, congratulating Idia and promising to bring a gift to Idia's dismay.[65] As the frozen students were being rearranged for the wedding, a ghost came in bearing news of Riddle, Ace, Epel, and Rook attempting to break into the wedding. Azul lamented over how they gave up on his plan while Leona commented that they should've been using force in the first place.[66] As the ghosts continued preparing for the wedding, tired of their inability to move, encouraged Idia to kiss the bride in order to end the whole ordeal, leading to them chanting "kiss" to Idia's dismay.[67] As Idia continued panicking Leona and Vil confronted him over things they overheard from the ghosts of Idia trying to get one of the frozen students to take his place, feigning sadness. When Idia was unable to rebut them, Azul pointed out that Idia's cries were proof he was unable to disprove the rumors.[68]

When Ace and eventually Riddle, Epel, and Rook finally arrived at the cafeteria where the wedding was being held they proceeded to tell off Eliza and her ghost servants for enabling her dreams of an ideal prince and forcing Idia to play the role of fiance despite his protests. In response Eliza's friend Chubby used his 500 years of lingering attachment to swell up and attack the four wedding crashers, forcing Yuu to have to log roll the frozen students, including Azul, out of the room in order to keep them out of harms way.[69] Following Eliza's realization that her true love is Chubby she rejected Idia and married Chubby, freeing the trapped students. Upon being freed, Jade complimented Rook for his quick thinking to protect the frozen students, Rook remarked that Jade would do the same in his position, Azul commented that instead Jade would just stand by and watch. Upon Eliza thanking them and telling them she would visit with their baby in the future, Azul along with the rest of the students yelled at her to "never come back".[70]

Star Sending

During the assembly where Crowley announced the Stargazers for this year, Azul was present and showed interest in being a Stargazer as it seems like it could provide business opportunities. Jade surmised his interest was so that he could take advantage of people's wishes.[71]

Idia and Ortho were the ones who went to get Azul's wish for the wishing stars. After Azul wished for Mostro Lounge to become more prosperous, Idia called it very characteristic for Azul and then said the predictability made his wish boring. Ortho scolded Idia for saying his thoughts out loud, but Azul brushed off Ortho's concerns as he already had plans in place to ensure his wish succeeds. In response to Ortho's curiosity about his preparations, Azul explained that in the future Mostro Lounge would hold a business collaboration to promote Mostro Lounge's 3 most popular dishes, before complaining about Crowley's greed for wanting royalty fees due to Mostro Lounge gaining popularity for being at the prestigious NRC. Idia seemed to notice the irony of Azul calling Crowley greedy before Ortho asked if Azul's wish was more of a goal than a wish. Idia agreed noting how Azul hates luck based games, with Azul proclaiming that he'll ensure all of his wishes come true, leading Idia to point out that Azul missed the point of the event.[72]

During the Star Send Off ceremony, Azul was present and suspects that the meteor shower was something planned by Idia, and complimented the show while also lamenting the missed opportunity to make people pay for the beautiful show.[73]
