Episode of Savanaclaw/Chapter 3

The third chapter of Disney Twisted Wonderland The Comic -Episode of Savanaclaw- was published in Monthly G Fantasy May 2023 issue on April 18th, 2023. This chapter covers the second half of "Territory Breakthrough", "A Spelldrive Fight", "Encounter at Midnight", and "Sparks Flying" (Episode 2 Chapter 12-15) from the game.

Summary

The group arrive at the Savanaclaw dorm to ask Jack some questions, but he refuses to answer. They later challenged Leona and the dorm members to a practice game, but they lose. In the middle of the night, Yuuka encounters Malleus. Meanwhile, Jack unintentionally spies on Leona and Ruggie's conversation and learns of their plan.

This chapter starts off with Ace, Deuce, Cater, Yuuka and Grim arriving at the Savanaclaw dorm in search of the first year named Jack Howl. They spot him during his daily workout and offer to protect him since the culprit might be after him. However, Jack declines the offer since he doesn’t need protection. He leaves and several unnamed Savanaclaw members appear to pick a fight with the group. Yuuka volunteers to fight them on her own when Leona and Ruggie appear to interrupt. Grim remembers the hyena beastman who stole his favorite lunch, addressing him as "tasty food" since he doesn't know his name. Ruggie is offended, and introduces himself as Ruggie Bucchi. Yuuka also remembers Leona from the garden. Leona decides that a better way to settle things would be to have a practice game between Savanaclaw and the group.

At first, Grim, Ace, Deuce and Cater gain the upper hand against Savanaclaw until Leona beats them in a single strike, thus winning the game. Leona, filled with confidence, demands another round even though Yuuka and the others are exhausted. Jack interferes and stops the game because he can't stand to watch this shameful display. The other Savanclaw members make fun of Jack for being a killjoy and ruining their fun, and Leona approaches him to pat his shoulder. He tells Jack that "all that machismo he got going for him is really great", then he decides to call it a day. It's pointless trying to deal with people. Before Leona and the other Savanaclaw members leave, one of them warns Yuuka and the others that the next time they trespass on their turf again, they will be in for a world of pain. Afterwards, Deuce and Yuuka thank Jack for saving their lives. He denies having done it for any real reason, he didn't intend on saving them. Ace and Grim complain about wanting to back to their dorms, they're dirty and hungry now. Before leaving, Cater tells Jack to be careful. Jack tells them that they don't have a reason to worry about him.

That night, Grim fell asleep and dreams about the game. Yuuka is preparing for bed when she notices a shadow outside of the dorm, and decides to check it out. She unexpectedly meets Diasomnia's dorm leader, Malleus Draconia. She has no idea who he is nor what dorm he comes from though, and Malleus is surprised realizing that she doesn't know who he is. He decides not to tell her, since it would be better for her not to know. He tells her that she can call him whatever she chose even though she could later come to regret it. Yuuka remains silent to avoid outwardly calling him a weirdo. Continuing their conversation, Malleus has no idea there was someone living in an abandoned building, and he is disappointed that now he'll have to look for different ruins for his nightly stroll. Yuuka wonders if the horned student is a ruins otaku, and suddenly Malleus decides to leave. She's caught off-guard when he disappears using magic.

Meanwhile, at Savanclaw, Leona is playing chess by himself again when Ruggie enters the room to bring him dinner. Ruggie reports to Leona that he has already taken another job, and Leona is pleased. He asks Ruggie if he did it for his own sake, and Ruggie insists it was for the both of them. They are in this together when it comes to wanting to turn the world on its head. Ruggie briefly recalls his past and how he tried to survive in the poor district he grew up. He's like the hyenas of the past, who joined forces with the King of Beasts and chose to follow him because they wanted to improve their lot in life. Before Leona begins to eat, he orders Ruggie to hunt more discretely, and to make sure he doesn't leave evidence. Ruggie agrees, then mentions that hyenas aren't known for leaving even a scrap of their prey behind. He goes on to gleefully ask Leona who their next victim is, and from which dorm. Leona replies about the wolf skulking around and listening in on people's private conversations. Leona calls out Jack since he knows he's here, and he remarks on how tasteless of him it was to eavesdrop them with those huge ears of his. Jack reveals himself to Leona and Ruggie, and Leona asks him what he wanted so late at night. Ruggie teasingly asks him if he wanted a lullaby sung to him to go to bed. Jack gets straight to the point by asking Leona why he's doing this, realizing he's been the one hurting others around campus.

Leona doesn't deny it, and he goes on to tell Jack about his background. Two years ago before Jack enroll at Night Raven College, Savanaclaw was the routine champion until they faced Diasomnia during an opening much of the tournament. They were defeated. Their dorm, with its reputation for brutally eliminating their opponents, was comparable to a kitten who'd yet to open their eyes, and that disgusting display was broadcast to the entire world. The dorm leader was branded incompetent and Savanaclaw's chances of being scouted by top companies or the pros went up in smoke. Jack corrects Leona's words, saying that he wasn't good enough. Leona agreed, because they weren't taking it seriously or giving it their full effort until last year. Trying to fight that "monster" head-on without any sort of strategy was stupid. Savanaclaw is based on the King of Beasts' "spirit of persistence". Jack disagrees with what Leona is doing, accusing him of being a coward by sneak-attacking other people like this to improve their chances of winning. Leona reminds Jack that he's only thinking about what is best for everyone else. If they defeat Malleus and avenge their name, they are sure to win back public acclaim. If they don't win this year then Malleus will be inducted into the Hall of Fame and this is their last chance. He expresses disgust towards Jack's goodness, then asks him if he wants to destroy the futures of all his upperclassmen. Jack becomes silent, unsure of how to respond to that. Leona advises Jack to use his head to corner prey, this is what it means to hunt. There's nothing cowardly about it. Ruggie supports Leona's decision to cheat, and Jack tries to reason with Leona once more, trying to convince him that he can beat them if he gives it all he got. He still remembers his play from three years ago, but before he can express how it felt to him, Leona interrupts to harshly tell him not to act like he knows anything about him. He coldly tells him that no amount of effort he put into it will make a difference in the end, then he threatens Jack to leave if he wants to see the light of another day.

Jack leaves Leona's room in the great disappointment, and once he's gone Ruggie asks Leona if he should take Jack out. Leona tells him not to bother, he doesn't have any proof and it would be a waste of his talent. He orders Ruggie to keep an eye on Jack for now, and once he takes off Leona lays down in bed, thinking about what Jack said. He recalls words said by his older brother, then comments on how alike they are. The chapter ends with Leona negatively calls himself as "the hated second place" in his thoughts and another drop of blot is shown corrupting a magic crystal.

Differences Between Manga and Game

• In the game, Savanaclaw dorm was thought to only include beastmen until Episode 6, where it was revealed that Rook Hunt was a former dorm member of Savanaclaw. In the manga, there are revealed to be some muscular and chubby humans.
• In the manga, Jack's student ID is shown on Cater's phone.
• Yuuka almost got int a fight with two unnamed Savanaclaw members until Leona intervenes and stops them. In the game, the fight was directed at Ace, Deuce, Grim and Cater.
• In the game, Yuu does not participate in the practice Spelldrive game with Savanaclaw, but in the Manga, Yuuka participated by helping the others.
• In the game, Yuu decides to go outside at night because they were unable to sleep. In the manga, Yuuka was about to go to sleep until she spots a shadow outside and decides to check it out.
• Ruggie's past was briefly shown where he had a difficult life growing up in a poor area of Sunset Savana.
• After Ruggie left, Leona remembers his older brother which never occurs in the game.
