Leona manages to convince the other dorm leads to let Malleus stay in the Spelldrive tournament; Idia being the only one who wants him out of the game. Before the dorm leader meeting concludes, Vil notices that they forgot to inform Malleus about the dorm leader meeting again.

Meanwhile, Yuuka is working out for the next year's Spelldrive tournament while Grim continues to sulk. The Ramshackle ghosts see this and offer to teach Yuuka and Grim how to play, as they used to play, about ninety years ago. Grim perks up as he wanted to learn more about the game when Crowley interrupts to inform them of a serious matter. He gives Yuuka and Grim the task of finding out the cause of potential competitors being injured in various accidents. Grim initially refuses Crowley's request and brushes it off as them being clumsy, but Crowley manages to persuade him by offering him a position in the tournament for his help. Yuuka asks how they would play, because they would be lacking five members, but he assures them that he's gotten that covered.

With that, they go around to ask the various injured students about what happened. The boy who broke his left are recalls how it felt like his legs moved on their own. The next victim was in Pomefiore, and he explains how he burnt his hand from a cauldron during class. They ask a few other guys but haven't come up with any sort of lead, and they take a short break to think things over. They unexpectedly encounter Ace, who came to check on them. Just then, Deuce ran up to the trio to inform them that Trey fell down the stairs and got hurt.

At Heartslabyul, Ace, Deuce, Grim and Yuuka enter Trey's room to find Cater with him. Trey remorsefully states that he won't be able to enter the tournament, because he broke his leg and he will need to use crutches for a while. Grim feels bad for him and hands over a can of tuna to help him feel better, and Trey expresses his thanks. Cater feels disappointed that their star player got hurt, and Riddle comes into the room, surprised to find Ace, Deuce, Grim and Yuuka there. Worried, Riddle asks Trey if he needs anything to eat or drink, but Trey declines his offer and says he's fine. Riddle feels guilty, because he believes it was his fault for him getting hurt. They were about to depart for some task when his body began to move on its own. He fell and was about to go down the stairs when Trey pulled him back to safety, but the force caused him to fall down instead. Riddle blames himself for Trey getting hurt, but Trey assures him that he doesn't feel the same way. He chose to save Riddle, even knowing that it could be risky.

Everyone leaves to let Trey rest and they head into the lounge to discuss the incidents some more. Riddle reveals that he was investigating them too, and Yuuka and Grim explain how Crowley asked them to look into it. They theorize that someone is targeting potential star players, as a means of eliminating threats for the upcoming tournament. Riddle recalls how it felt his body was moving on its own, which was what everyone else has been saying thus far, which leaves them with very little to go by. Riddle, Cater, Deuce and Ace decide to join Yuuka and Grim’s investigation and they decide to try to predict the culprit's next move. Riddle explains that they should identify and safeguard the student most likely to be targeted next, so if someone was to strike they can quickly defend the person and catch the perpetrator. Ace asks how they can find the next target when Cater points out that he has eyes on a few possible targets among their major contenders on his smartphone.

First, they head to Pomefiore to find Vil and Rook teaching Epel the proper way to hold the cup of tea. Cater and Riddle explain that Rook Hunt is an exceptional standout player from last year, but he's a bit of an odd guy. After they observe their conversation, the group realize that they aren't going to be targeted, because they focus more on beauty and elegance when playing. They're not even practicing for the game.

Next on Cater's list are the Leech Brothers, second years Jade and Floyd. Ace, Deuce and Grim comment that not only do they look the same- but they both look strong and are very tall. Riddle explains their coordinated attacks are wicked strong, and Ace asks Riddle if they should mark them. He replies that if he were the culprit, he would save them for last. His aversion to be near the brothers alerts the group, and they wonder why that is, but before Riddle can finish explaining Floyd, Floyd spotted them. He addresses Riddle as "Goldfish" and asks if they are playing hide and seek. Riddle looks disturbed before reminding Floyd not to call him weird names. Floyd says he likes calling him that since he's small, red, and looks like a goldfish. Grim calls Floyd weird, and Floyd happily takes notice of him, only to grab him by the neck and gleefully asks if he can squeeze him real tight. Grim is terrified and demands to be let go. Jade joins in the conversation and thinks Riddle's objective is to do a little reconnaissance for the tournament. When Cater tries to explain to Jade saying they have a valid reason for it, but he and his twin can't just shrug off this little espionage attempt. Grim thinks that he sees something dangerous about them, even though they act calmly and the group immediately make a hasty retreat. Floyd chases after them thinking they are playing a game.

After they manage to lose Floyd, Grim questions the twins and asks what their problem is. Cater comments that if he had to go after those two he would be scared about their response. Suddenly, Cater and Riddle realize its getting late, so Riddle suggests they check one last person before calling it today. But he can't join them, because "One mustn't play croquet in the garden after 5:00 P.M.". Grim gets annoyed that Riddle hasn't changed, and Riddle becomes embarrassed, claiming that he's much more lenient than he was before. Cater assures Riddle that soon he will loosen up some more; one of his best qualities is that he's dedicated.

The group head out towards the last guy on the list: a first-year from Savanaclaw, Jack Howl.
