Episode 6-6: Detecting Effort!

I understand what you're trying to say.
However, as we already discussed during our VDC practice...
…Neige and his team had the power of popularity on their side since well before we got on stage to perform that day.
Even if we had been at our best, there’s no telling if we would have been able to give it our all on stage.
There's no way to know if giving it our all would have secured us the victory, either.
Popularity isn’t necessarily something that can be overcome by effort and your own merits.

Kalim
Kalim
|
Yeah, Jamil’s got the right idea. So you don’t have to beat yourself up over this like it’s all on you!
|
Vil
Vil
|
Fair point. However, that doesn’t mean that Neige and the Dwarves didn’t put forth the effort or struggle in their own way.
|
Jamil & Kalim

……!

When I saw their performance, I was so shaken I used rather strong language to disavow it.
But putting in the effort to win over a crowd with popularity and putting in the effort to improve technically and overwhelm a crowd are both still effort.
The only difference between us is where we chose to put our effort.
Besides, you all have no idea just how hard Neige and the Dwarves worked behind the scenes, do you?
|
Epel
Epel
|
Huh? What do you mean by that?
|
Vil

The first time Neige and I were in the same play…
…he would leave lessons well before me, saying that he had to go home and clean the house.
At the time, I couldn’t help but get annoyed with him. I thought of him as a person spoiled by talent.
Then I learned the truth.
I learned that the Dwarves that Neige performed with for VDC all live with him.
Since long before he and I met as child actors, they have always been his support system. His shoulder to lean on.

Wait, he’s lived with them since he joined the industry?
|
Vil
Vil
|
Indeed. Though I don’t know the details as to why.
He did chores, then went to his lessons, then went back home to do even more housework, using only breaks to practice his lines.
And yet, he was never bitter. He would always whistle while he worked and greet with a cheerful “Good morning!”
I have no idea how hard that must have been. And how could I? It’s not something I’ve ever experienced, after all.
|
Epel
Epel
|
Uh, well, that’s…
|
Vil
Vil
|
Moreover, Neige has never spoken a word of this to the media.
But I’m sure you must have known about it, right, Rook?
|
Rook
Rook
|
…I did.
What attracts people to Roi du Neige most of all is his lovely smile.
…However, that smile is the result of all the numerous hardships he has overcome. That is exactly how it captures the hearts of the people.
There are even rumors that he donates all the money he receives from his work to volunteer organizations.
|
Vil
Vil
|
I’m surprised that you know that much. I don’t believe that information has been made public, either.
|
Rook
Rook
|
This is well known among his core fans.
|
Vil
Vil
|
I see. I heard that he donated all of his VDC winnings as well.
To the futures of children around the world.
|
Kalim
Kalim
|
I had no idea he had all that stuff going on.
|
Vil
Vil
|
……*sigh*
Here is the point I was trying to make. If you had known about Neige’s home life prior to VDC…
…could you really have performed with all your might and voted for our team?
Could you have judged Neige’s performance for what it was, without any tinted glasses changing your view?
|
Deuce & Epel

Other members aside, I doubt Kalim would have.
|
Kalim
Kalim
|
No, I would’ve… Urr, ugh… I dunno…
|
Ace
Ace
|
I would’ve voted for us, not a problem.
C’mon, VDC isn’t some kind of misery contest, it’s about how well you perform on stage, yeah?
|
Vil
Vil
|
Exactly. I see you understand.
|
Ace
Ace
|
Huh?
|
Vil
Vil
|
Myself, each of you, Neige, and every other person who took to that stage each brings their own story with them.
That is why the stage—actually, the entertainment world as a whole—values results first and foremost.
|
Epel
Epel
|
Urk.
|
Vil

NRC Tribe’s performance lost to that of Royal Sword Academy’s. That’s it.
I believe that the impact my indiscretions had on the result is immeasurable.
So I would like to make it up to you.
|
Choice 1: Make it up? How so?
|
Choice 2: But I think you’re plenty sorry already.
|
Vil
Vil
|
Do you recall what was written on the flyer calling for people to join VDC?
|
Ace
Ace
|
Um… Something about the chance to go pro and…

Deuce

Splitting the 5,000,000 Madol prize between everyone. Right?
|
Vil
Vil
|
That’s right. Those are the promises I made to attract members.
So the prize of 5,000,000 Madol that was lost because of me…
…I will give to you all out of my own pocket.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!?!
