Background
As a member of the Viper family, which has served the Asim family as attendants for generations, Jamil was assigned to be Kalim's personal attendant ever since he was a child. The Vipers do not live in the same household as the Asims, however. Jamil resented the fact that his parents were completely subservient to Kalim's parents and his position as well. Although Jamil has been shown to have great talent even in his childhood, his parents would scold him for not letting Kalim be the winner or the best in their games. Jamil would reluctantly agree, but this resulted in his resentment building up over the years until the events of Episode 4 of the Main Story, where Jamil executes his plan to oust Kalim from the position of dorm leader of Scarabia. In contrast to Kalim's happy recollections of his time with Jamil, Jamil is shown to not treat the same memories fondly. Kalim would search for Jamil in Asim Park and seek the help of the security personnel, who would give him access to the security cameras in the park. As a result, even though Jamil wanted to spend his break times in the park dancing by himself, Kalim would always end up finding him and he had to spend time with Kalim again. Jamil himself was unaware of the fact that Kalim had the help of the park's staff until Kalim mentioned it.[1] Outside of his time in the Asim household, Jamil played with Najma and the other kids in his neighborhood and would often emerge as the winner of the animal toy stacking game. On the other hand, Najma would sulk at her loss and Jamil ended up getting scolded by his parents while having to put away the toys scattered by her while she was gone.
He is stated to be able to use magic from a young unspecified age. Jamil used to love dates, like Najma. His dislike for the food stemmed from having an insect crawl onto his hands after they had bought dates from their usual stall in the Camel Bazaar. By this point, Jamil was able to use magic, albeit without much control. He used fire magic in an effort to exterminate the insect, burnt the dates stallholder's canopy by accident, and ever since, he has not been able to tolerate the sight or smell of dates.[1]
In addition, Jamil was put into a two-week coma after testing Kalim's curry for poison when they were younger.[2] Despite that incident, his favorite food is still curry, while Kalim came to dislike it instead.
According to Jamil himself, it was only in middle school that he was able to have a taste of what it is like to have time for himself and experience various activities like studying and dancing together with friends. His time then likely reinforced his desire for freedom in his life.
